At Red Hat, we never work alone. We believe connections built on a shared purpose builds a sense of community. We openly share information that contributes not only to our own projects, but to the work of others. We believe that everyone can achieve more when we all work together—more than any of us could on our own.
There are great individuals, organizations, and companies in our own backyard doing the same thing and holding the same beliefs. How do we highlight them and show the power of collaboration and the strength of making connections? Our in-house Brand Team partnered with three agencies, Baldwin&, Myriad Media, and Billups. Together, we brought the first people-powered billboard to life.
Anyone can make a printed or digital billboard. It only takes a few people. So, we thought a people-powered billboard would be a great way to show people working together to share a message about just that—collaboration. Passing the letters across, making sure each letter arrives at the right destination, correcting impromptu typos, while sharing the broader message. It would be a way for local community leaders, Red Hatters, partners, and others to make new connections with each other and work together to show the power of collaboration.
And, just as important, it’d be fun.
On the day of the event, the excitement was high. An audience gathered—people were cheering, laughing, and anticipating the next message. We got great press coverage (Creativity Online, ADweek, MAD Media, IT Videos) and a good buzz on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). The plan, though, was in what happened after the event. With the recap video live on the website, we would be able to tell this message globally, not just locally. And we could share new stories and information along the way, while highlighting more organizations and individuals that make #peoplepowered collaboration part of their daily work.
